After graduating high school, Mike received his degree in Pharmacy. But his love for gems and precious jewels never dimmed. By 1970 he had established himself in Barrington, and sold jewelry in the back of Esh Pharmacy while working as the pharmacist in the front of the business. As time went on, the jewelry inventory grew and eventually more space was needed. M.J. Miller & Co. moved from the Esh location in June of 2000 to the current location on Main Street.
I started my career in the jewelry business here at M.J. Miller & Co. in 2008. I have always had an interest in jewelry and working at M.J. Miller & Co. has rewarded me with the opportunity to learn and explore every aspect of the jewelry world. From basic repairs to gemology, I enjoy working with and helping customers with all their jewelry needs.
Raised in Northwest suburbs, I started in the jewelry industry my senior year of high school when I worked for an established Chicagoland retailer. I left retail to work for a diamond and jewelry wholesaler in Chicago's downtown jewelry district, followed by 8 years with another independent jewelry retailer where I completed training through the Gemological Institute of America. The last 14 years I have been with M.J. Miller & Co.
Since my freshman year at Barrington High School, building and creating jewelry has been an artistic outlet for me. After an apprenticeship with a local jeweler, I decided to expand my education and attend F.I.T. (The Fashion Institute of Technology) in NYC. I have worked in many facets of the jewelry business over the past 25 years, 12 of those with M.J. Miller & Co.
After spending a summer in Belgium at age sixteen, I began working at a jewelry store and was hooked! I earned my Graduate Gemologist degree and began studying appraising. After many years of teaching, study, ISA membership and pro-bono work, I received my CAPP (Certified Appraiser of Personal Property). I've enjoyed the last 11 years as jewelry appraiser at M.J. Miller & Co.
I started working one day a week at M.J. Miller & Co. while attending nursing school. I was eventually given the opportunity to work full-time and learn the business. As Mr. Miller's assistant, I also oversee shipping, repairs, inventory, photography and the computer system. I have recently expanded my role by helping edit the catalog. One job perk: seeing stones that most industry professionals will never experience in the lifetime!
